Is this thing on? Lol! Happy Monday! Let’s catch up!
No Discipline, Lack of Motivation, Procrastination, Oh My!
It’s been almost a month since my last blog post. WOW! Full disclosure I’ve been suffering from lack of discipline, lack of motivation, horrible time management skills, procrastination, and pure laziness. Just keeping it 100 percent real. These things have also been affecting me when it comes to my business. Over the weekend I had a long heart to heart with myself and said enough is enough. I have got to do better. I have way too much that I want to do and accomplish to continue down this non-productive path. And absolutely nothing is going to just land in my lap, I’ve got to hustle and make sh*t happen.
Part of correcting a problem is to admit that the problem exists and then to take measures to fix it. So, I’m working on some improvements that will help make me more productive. One of the things I’m committing to doing is starting each day with a to-do list. It’s amazing how prioritizing your day with a simple to-do list can help.
Moved My Daughter To College
Last weekend we moved my daughter to college. It was one of the most emotional days that I’ve had in my life. Inside I was an emotional wreck the entire drive to campus. However, I had to keep it together for her because I know she was nervous.
As you can probably imagine, move-in day was bananas. Therefore, since we spent most of the day moving her things in and arranging her room, I was able to keep my emotions in check. However, when I hugged her goodbye before I had to leave, I lost it. I could no longer hold back the tears. She’s my baby girl and I’m so proud of her. She’s had some challenges over the years so seeing her make it to college gives my heart joy. She was nervous on the first day of classes, but she seems to be settling in well and making new friends. During the next 4 years, she’s going to walk into adulthood. I’m praying that she stays focused and that she trusts the process.
I’m A Teacher Now
I can officially add instructor to my resume. What?!?! I’m teaching an interior design course at my alma mater. In my wildest dreams, I could have never predicted that I would be a college instructor. It’s funny how life works. I’m truly enjoying this experience. I love having the opportunity to help students achieve their goal of becoming an interior designer.
House of Spaulding Updates
Things are slowly chugging along in the house. That said, we still have a lot to accomplish. However, we pretty much knew from day 1 that the updates to our house will take a while. I’m talking years and I’m perfectly OK with that. Slow and steady wins the race. I’m taking my time on some of the design decisions to make sure I get things just right. It’s true when they say that designers can have a tough time designing their own homes. Lol! It’s because we have access to so much and are exposed to so many great options. It’s also because we’re busy designing for everyone else that we have to carve out time to design for ourselves. Here are a few things we’ve been working on.
We finally had this big ugly tree removed from our front yard. I will never understand why builders plant trees in front of homes or close to homes that they know will become too big. This picture really doesn’t do this tree justice. It was ginormous and tall. Having trees this size so close to your home is never a good idea. I mean in the event of a bad storm this tree could’ve easily fallen on our roof and done some major damage.
I’m not necessarily a fan of removing trees but this one had to go. First of all, for the reason that I noted above and also because it blocked the view of our home from the street. Lastly, the roots were starting to lift the concrete pathway that leads to our front door. We didn’t want the roots doing further damage by growing under the house and damaging pipes. There are still a couple of trees on each side of our front yard so all is not lost. Lastly, we also removed a tree in our backyard because of the root issue as well.
We have been priming all of the walls on the first floor of our home. The dated tan, red, and chocolate brown had to go. We couldn’t bear looking at those colors any longer. Priming the walls also got rid of that pesky old home smell.
Here’s the foyer after it was primed. The doors will be updated with fresh paint and new hardware. We’re also replacing the wood floors and those light fixtures are going too. I still have to decide on a paint color but I’m positive it will be a shade of white or greige. Therefore, we chose a white primer. So, for now, we are living with just the primer on the walls and it’s still a major improvement over the previous wall colors. We’ll be painting as soon as I decide on a color, which my husband wishes was done like yesterday. I’m working on it, honey. Really, lol!
Here’s a sneak peek of my office which I’ll share as soon as it’s complete. I am in LOVE with the black walls. They turned out just as I hoped they would. I’m filling my boards (one is pictured here but I have 2 in my office) with lots of inspiration. I just have a few more things to finish and then I will be ready to share it with you all. It’s coming along nicely and it’s awesome to be able to work in a space that’s beautiful and inspires me.
Now that we’re all caught up and I’ve shared the things I’ve been struggling with, what are some struggles or challenges that you need to overcome? Share them in the comments below and don’t worry this is a judgment-free zone.
