Happy hump day, I hope that you all enjoyed the long holiday weekend. On Friday of last week, my daughter graduated from high school and I couldn’t be more proud of my baby girl. She’ll soon be heading off to college (cue the uncontrollable tears). We had a low-key weekend and holiday, we grilled out and ate way too much food.
It’s time for the next space in House of Spaulding that’s getting a much-needed makeover. Today, I’m going to share with you the concept for my home design studio. For those who don’t know, I currently run my interior design business out of my home. In the future, the plan is to move the business outside of my home but for now, this works. We are still a newish business so it’s very important that we keep our overhead low.
In our rental house, my office was in the formal living room, it was the first room that you saw when you entered the house. This drove me bananas. I hated that my office was right off the front door because it meant that it needed to be clean at all times. Which wasn’t always the case. Since there weren’t any doors to close the room off, there also wasn’t any privacy.
So, when we moved into this house I decided that my office wouldn’t be in the formal living room. My studio will be in our spare bedroom. Using the 4th bedroom as my office was a difficult decision to make because it meant we won’t have a dedicated guest bedroom. The room isn’t big enough to design in a way where it could serve both functions. However, when I really think about it, I really don’t want just anyone having access to my design studio. So, we’ll come up with an alternative plan for when we have guests come and stay.
I currently have a temporary office set up in our dining room. This set up poses the same issue from our previous rental, I’m in a room right off the front entry with no privacy. Therefore, I cannot wait to finish my new space. Let’s take a look at how the room looks currently.
As you can see the walls are painted a deep purple. Not a bad color, just not right for my design studio.
Oh and that ceiling fan has got to go. It will be replaced with something more modern. My husband actually likes this ceiling fan. He keeps trying to find another room in the house where we can move it. Luckily, there aren’t any.
I’ll be storing samples, books, and supplies in that closet.
One of the first decisions I made about my office was the wall color. I decided that the walls in my office would be painted black. Yes, you heard right, black. For the longest time, I have been wanting to paint a room in my home black. And since the office is my private quarters, it was the perfect place for such a bold color. Black is my favorite color and has been since I can remember. It’s such a sophisticated and timeless color. The walls will be painted black, but the ceiling, doors, and trim will be white. The white will help balance out the black walls. Along with the black and white, I will be mixing in wood tones to add warmth to the space.

Just like in my sons’ room, I had to be very careful when space planning this space. I need to pack this room with all the essentials that I need to be productive without it feeling too cramped.
Here’s the floor plan which shows the furniture layout.

So, let’s go over some necessities needed for this space.
- Of course, I need a desk and a comfortable chair. There will actually be two desks facing each other. The second desk will be for my husband who will soon be assisting with the business and the blog. In the future, I may take on an intern and he or she could use that desk as well. Lastly, when no one is sitting there, I can use this desk to lay out fabric samples when putting presentations together.
- I need tons of storage options for samples, vendor catalogs, fabric books, client binders, office supplies, etc. The cubby bookshelf that I selected is the perfect versatile piece that will provide me with lots of storage.
- I’ll be using my existing credenza to store my printer, printer paper, office supplies, and whatever else I need to store in there.
- As mentioned above, I’ll also be storing things in the closet.
- Lastly, I am creating a beverage/snack station. Go to have my tea and snacks!
So, there you have it, the design concept and plans for my home interior design studio. Work is getting ready to begin in this space and I’ll be revealing the finished space as soon as it’s done. Stay tuned!
